Overview

Each summer, the Berkeley Research Academy for Mathematical Innovation hosts a Research Symposium where all researchers can formally present their work developed within the academy.

Purpose of Event
The Research Presentation Event has three goals:

Student Recognition: Highlight exceptional research contributions through formal presentations.
Research Continuity & Faculty Engagement: Create opportunities for students to continue developing their projects with new researchers. Faculty gain early access to motivated research talent and opportunities to mentor or extend promising work.
Community Building: Strengthen connections between students, mentors, and the broader academic network while providing students with experience presenting research in a professional academic setting.

Awards

How awards work

Research awards are awarded by the Berkeley Research Academy to students who produce exceptional work of originality, rigor, and contribution. Awards typically range from $500 to $10,000, depending on the scope and impact of the work.

Eligibility

Students become eligible for awards by:

Completing a research project under academy mentorship
Submitting a paper for internal review or external dissemination
Demonstrating independent reasoning, technical depth, and clarity of exposition.

Award Classifications

A project may receive one or more classifications.

Frontier Research Award

Recognizes research that advances or explores problems at the boundary of current understanding, demonstrating originality and forward-looking insight.

Originality Recognition

Recognizes work that introduces genuine new ideas, perspectives, or approaches.

Junior Research Award (High School Students)

Recognizes exceptional original research by pre-college students that demonstrates rigor, independence, and depth beyond standard coursework.

Elegance & Clarity Recognition

Recognizes research distinguished by clear exposition, conceptual simplicity, and thoughtful organization of complex ideas.

Technical Depth & Rigor Recognition

Recognizes research that demonstrates exceptional technical mastery, precision, and mathematical rigor relative to the student’s level.

Interdisciplinary Connection Recogniton

Recognizes work that meaningfully connects mathematical theory with other areas, such as computation, applied methods, or adjacent scientific fields.

Use of Award Funds

Award funds are intended to support continued research and academic development, including:

Conference submissions or presentation costs
Research materials or software
Extension or continuation of the awarded project
